Dedicatory introduction
TO
HER ROYAL HIGHNESS
THE
DUCHESS OF YORK.

MADAM,
While I entertain the deepest sense of personal obligation for the peculiar honour of having obtained your Royal Highness's patronage, I am equally sensible of the singular advantage of such a circumstance, to a work written for the purpose of relieving modest merit.
If these volumes should be found not wholly unworthy of the gracious protection which your Royal Highness has condescendingly bestowed upon them, it will add to the happiness, though it cannot increase the gratitude, with which I subscribe myself
  Your ROYAL HIGHNESS'S
  Most respectful and
  Most devoted Servant,
  MARY BARKER
