3: Medieval PartonSo far all negative evidence before 1566 (see below);
 no Parton-in-Moresby references found in indexes of PRO printed calendars; the monastic cartularies of St. Bees, Holme Cultram, Furness or Lanercost (transcripts at JLC).
 However, the full text of Inquisitiones Post Mortem relating to early Lords of the Manor of Moresby (at the PRO) may contain relevant information
 (e.g. the Inquisition at the death of Hugh de Moriceby, 28 Jan, 22 Edward III 1347/8, includes an extent of the manor, not abstracted in the PRO calendar).
  I have not yet found the truth behind the statement in
 Parson & White "Directory of Cumberland & Westmorland" (1829) that Parton "is more ancient than Whitehaven, and the military have their route designated 'to Parton' when Whitehaven is intended as their quarters".
3: Church assets 1535"Valor Ecclesiasticus" quoted in

4: Growth of Irish coal tradeNef, J.U. "The Rise of the British Coal Industry" (1932)
 There's a bit of confusion here:
 Beckett, J.V. "Coal and Tobacco" (1981) appears to cite Nef as evidence for the early importance of Parton as a coal port, though Nef's references, both in the main text and the statistical Appendix d (iii) are to Workington. Further examination of Nef's sources (at the PRO) and related documents he didn't have time to check in detail might be interesting.
4: Fletchers and MoresbyBrooker, J.G. "The Fletcher Family" (3 volume typescript, 1935-9, at JLC), which includes family trees and quotes, inter alia:

5: collapse of pierBeckett "Coal and Tobacco" states that the old pier was destroyed in a gale in the early 1630s, apparently based on a claim in
 PRO E/134/31&32 Charles II/Hilary term 26 (a document in the later foreshore rights battle, see page 9 notes) which I have not read.
 My more tentative interpretation is based on the 1678 Fletcher petition

5-6: pier sketch mapLetter from Thomas Tickell to Sir John Lowther, 18 Jan 1674/5.
 Serious embarrassment here: I came across a reproduction of the sketch-map, shortly before sending the book to press, in an article about salt-pans in the Bulletin of the Cumbria Industrial History Society (December 1988 issue, by Blake Tyson), and jotted down the letter reference. Finding I didn't have time to look up the letter, in
 WRO microfilm of correspondence between Thomas Tickell & Sir John Lowther 1642-1706 (original, CRO D/LONS/W.2/1) I decided to mention the sketch anyway, because of the way its date fitted with other documents. See the "Corrections and Updates" page for the unfortunate sequel.
