Pigot's Directory, 1834
Extracted from Whitehaven listing. Descriptive text includes: ...well situated for bathing, and lies on the coast about a mile from Whitehaven. Here is a free school, endowed by the late Mr Williamson; and near to Parton, but in the parish of Hensingham [probably a mistake for "Harrington"- i.e. referring to Lowca], is an iron foundry. Lord Lonsdale has lately sunk a pit in this township, which is likely much to increase the population. The coals will be conveyed by a rail-way, extending from Parton to Whitehaven.
