Other defenders Bainbridge & Bell; attackers George, Agnew, Sewell & Ferguson. "The game throughout was marred by an excess of temper, and 15 minutes from time Cowan, who had been well watched throughout the game, was carried off injured. As a result of this Bell, the Parton full-back, was ordered off the field. Previous to this Bell had played a sound game as did George, Parton's smart half-back." "'Uppies and Downies were never in the same street" declared one spectator. There was more hacking than there was football and if the referee had exercised his prerogative half the 22 players would have received marching orders. The unfortunate part of these matches when the players are too busy hacking and retaliating to think of football, is that the innocent generally suffer. The experienced player at 'getting his own back' is too wily to be caught napping. On Monday Cowan, the Whitehaven pivot, and one of the cleanest footballers who ever stepped on a field, was badly laid out and had to be carried off suffering considerable pain." 0-2

WN* 21 May 1925
- Lowther Arms struck by lightning, c7pm Monday evening. "The atmosphere had been heavy and dark for a considerable time and the storm, as it approached the village, caused a death-like stillness.
Five men were seated in the bar of the "Lowther Arms" inn when, in the words of Miss A. Graham, the licensee, "There was a loud bang, and the house shook." Simultaneously a fire-grate was blown out and the five men were thrown from their seats. The room was filled with soot and plaster, a number of glasses were blown from a shelf, and a window was shattered into fragments.
One of the men, Mr John Nelson of Parton, received a severe blow to the thigh, but whether this was caused actually by the lightning or by the flying fragments is not known. Mr Wm. Coates, of Lowca, was also found to be suffering severely from shock, but was otherwise uninjured.
Two of the upstairs rooms, together with a loft, were also damaged, plaster being blown from a wall, and part of the gilding on a picture frame being stripped away as though with a knife. One room was said to be a foot deep in soot, plaster and pieces of brick.
Three of the four chimneys on the south gable were torn away and the falling brickwork caused serious damage to the roof.
The discharge, which caused the damage, was described graphically to a "WN*" representative. About seven o'clock there came a brilliant flash of a pinkish hue, which was followed by a tremendous report, and a roll of thunder which seemed to shake the foundations of the houses and even the streets. Silence followed for a few moments, and then villagers began to peep furtively from their doors and windows, and finally assemble outside the houses to learn the extent of the damage. So far as can be gathered, only this house was affected.
The "Lowther Arms" is an exceedingly old and solidly built structure. A foot-worn stone spiral staircase runs through the three floors and the rooms contain some remarkable old paintings on the upstairs bedroom panels. But for the solidity of the structure, and the fact that there was no fire in the bar the whole of the premises might have been destroyed.
The damage, which was not covered by insurance, is very considerable, but by Tuesday afternoon the inside rooms had been restored to a sound condition, and, apart from the missing chimneys, there is little to indicate the visit of this "terror of the storm"."
- Parton Athletic Football Club AGM held Mon at the Rechabite Hall, Mr J. Askew presiding. Well-placed in the league, and good "gates" considering the poor weather. Medals won in the Cockermouth Cup competition. Financial statement from the Secretary, Mr J. Skelly: income £164/9/4; expenditure £159/14/4. Treasurer, Mr P. Coan, gave further details. Mr J. The return of the Parton schoolgirls occasioned much rejoicing by old and young alike in the village. Many parents and interested young people attended the match with no less interest and confidence as to the result than is usually shown in a county football contest.
The team was brought home by motor charabanc, with their teacher and instructress, Miss Hellon. As the motor passed through the vilage the streets were lined with cheering crowds of people. The players waved red flags and streamers, and the captain held the cup aloft for all to see, while Miss Hellon had careful charge of the mascot, a beautiful doll.
The parade was extended to Lowca, where the reception was of an equally hearty description. Returning to the station, the charabanc halted for the arrival of the train which brought back the spectators, and as they joined the large assembly on the Square they were greeted with rounds of cheers.

- Inquest at Parton on Friday, before Mr G.A.L. Skerry. Identification by Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Jones, the widow. Having taken "a little girl" (i.e. presumably their daughter) for a walk, Mr Jones (age 21 years 10 months), though whithout a bathing costume, decided to swim out to a boat some 300 yards from shore (but Jones' diagonal swim would be more like 500 yards). He was in good health, and a very good swimmer, but had only been in the sea twice this year.
In the boat were Faulder Proud, coalminer of Bank Yard Road, and a small boy, out fishing. Proud did not notice Jones until he was about 20 yards away, swimming strongly. Jones put an arm and a leg over the side to rest for 3 or 4 minutes, and chatted with the occupants, saying he had had some "choppy" waves against him. Proud observed that it was common for swimmers to go out to boats. After Jones had swum about 200 yards back towards shore, Proud took no more notice of him, and never heard a shout- also he stated that even if he had subsequently seen or heard the swimmer in trouble, he could not have rescued him in time. [Also silly question from coroner "Is it usual for a person not to come up if he takes the cramp?" Reply, "I have heard that"]
James Sanderson of 115 Main Street (age 14) who watched Jones swim back towards shore, said that a big wave went over him and he never came up. He raised the alarm, and two boats were launched within 10 minutes. William McAvoy, coalminer of Main Street, said a boy (Sanderson?) told him of the incident and he swam out to where Jones was supposed to have disappeared, but could not find him. [Silly question about whether the sun might affect a swimmer- McAvoy said he did not think it would]. He waited for the tide to recede, and about 6pm found the body lying face downwards, roughly where the boy had said it went down. The legs were crossed, which suggested cramp.
Verdict- accidentally drowned.
- Funeral of Mr George Jones of Parton, who drowned on Thursday whilst bathing. Buried in the Nonconformist Burial Ground after a service in Parton Congregational Church (Rev G. Ashworth officiating). Hymn, "Jesu, lover of my soul" "was sung impressively". "The coffin was borne to the graveyard by deceased's companions- Messrs R. Sanderson, D. Bell, J. O'Neill, H. Casson, S. Sanderson, T. Bell, W. Addison, A. Fisher, T. Barr, W. Johnstone, J. Rudd and W. Stephenson." Died age 21; leaves a widow and 2-year-old daughter. His mother Mrs Shephard "has within a brief period lost her husband and family of two sons, and an adopted child."

Owing to a nasty knock, Bainbridge temporarily retired, but resumed at half-time." After half time the visitors were "too weak for Parton"; Wilson was "seldom called upon". More Parton goals by Sewell, Mitchell (2) and Smith. 5-1.

- Parton Congregational Church, special service, Sun morning, conducted by the Rev. H. Stowell M.A., of Whitehaven. Fairly large attendance; "stirring" sermon based on Mark 8/34. Organist Miss Edith Ashworth. "At the close of the service the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was administered by Mr. Stowell."

This bird was second for the R.P. special, and seventh in the R.P. competition. Mr Spedding's special prize was a young bird from his noted strain of homers."

Owens as clock setter and opener".
- Football, Egremont & Whitehaven League: Mon at Parton, Parton Ath. v Whitehaven Ath.; "good attendance of spectators". Watson stood in for George on Parton team. Mein repulsed attacks by Parton's Sewell & Mitchell, then Whitehaven scored. Further Parton attack led by Sewell, joined by Agnew & by Mitchell, who "equalised with an excellent drive". Despite "the sturdy defence of Bainbridge, Watson and Wilson", Whitehaven scored again. Parton's 3 half-backs, McAdam, Young & Henney, "were prominent with good work" and worried Whitehaven's defence. The next Whitehaven attack was stopped by Sewell, who took the ball back down the pitch and passed to Agnew, who equalised again. Wilson was "an admirable custodian" for Parton.
Second half "fast and keen", leading to Parton hand-ball in the penalty area, but Whitehaven missed the penalty. Then, however, "despite a stubborn defence on the part of Bainbridge, Watson, and McAdam", Whitehaven scored again. They later scored a fourth and "the Whitehaven goalkeeper dealt with shots from Mitchell, Agnew, and Sewell." 2-4. Ref. Mr Edwards of Workington.
- Football, Eg&Wh League?: Wath Brow v Parton at Wath Brow, Sat. Both previously unbeaten. Ideal conditions and "a fine crowd was a thrilling game". Brow had the best from the start but "Young endeavoured to get his forwards going, and Agnew occasionally slipped down the wing but was generally checked before becoming dangerous." Brow scored. "The Parton defence was frequently flustered by the tactics of the home forwards, though Young and McAdam were a tower of strength. Mitchell failed to get his forward line going. With the exception of Young he had no support from his halves, who were too busy occupied in looking after the home forwards." ... "Parton failed in combined movements, but did not hesitate to boot the ball. Young frequently lobbed the ball in the Brow goalmouth, but the home defenders were safe. The Brow forwards easily held the upper hand, and the Parton goalkeeper was frequently called upon."
Second half, Parton changed formation- McAdam went to full-back. Bad idea- in attempting to clear a shot, he headed into his own net. "Young was cool and resourceful under pressure, but the Brow halves frustrated any attempts by his forwards. With the exception of two corners, Parton were rarely dangerous." Another "stinging shot" got past the Parton keeper. "Mitchell, Sewell, and McLauchlin made good individual efforts for Parton, who at last made a recovery, and after continued pressure the home defence capitulated, Dakin being defeated from close range. The Parton forwards fought hard to reduce the lead, but failed to obtain any great assistance from their halves, consequently they failed to distinguish themselves. The visiting defence was being overworked." More Brow attacks: "The Parton goalie frequently saved the situation, but he ought to have caught a long dropping shot from JMossop which entered the net." 3-1.
- Parton now 3rd in table, played 6, won 3, drawn 1, lost 2 (7 points).

- Congregational Church, monthly people's service. Rev. G. Ashworth spoke from Isiah 23-3, on the theme of the need for religion even in an age of science: "Man had only to think and he would find a realm untouched by scientific investigation. Only one guide could lead us there- and that was religion. He did not mean the religion that was bolstered up by creeds and dogmas and organisations, but the religion of a human spirit, seeking and finding the meaning of experience, that through the grace of God puts love, joy and sweetness into life."

- Football, Eg&Wh League: "an interesting game", Sat at Parton. "Youdale made his first appearance for the home team. Arlecdon scored first, Parton replied with a "rapid succession" of shots from Sewell, Mitchell and Young, "but Arnmstrong's clearances were very creditable. Eventually Youdale led a bright movement before supplying McLaughlan. He centred to Mitchell, who drove home a capital goal. Second half, "the contest was very keen". "Wilson finally eased the pressure, and Parton then assumed command of the game. Young first scored from a penalty, and Mitchell followed with another smart goal. Youdale, McLaughlan, and Mitchell next took part in a brilliant movement which ended in Mitchell completing the 'hat-trick.' Heron and Bainbridge were resolute Parton defenders." 4-1. Allen officiated. "A number of floral tributes from friends were received."
- Football: Cumberland Shield- Arlecdon v Parton, Sat at Arlecdon, "in ideal weather, and before an excellent attendance". "Youdale was soon active for the visitors, but his final shot was ineffective." Arlecdon then forced a corner, which McGuinness cleared. "Parton subsequently applied heavy pressure, and Watson cleverly robbed the Parton forwards on many occasions, while the some goalkeeper made a splendid save from Carling. At this point, a home player was ordered off the field." Arlecdon nevertheless attacked, and Stainton was fouled in the penalty area. He "took the kick and scored easily. In reply, Parton sent in shot after shot against the home goal, but the defence was splendid." Later "From mid-field play Henney sent in a good centre which placed the home goal in danger, but Rodgers maintained his reputation as a stubborn defender and cleared." Second half "closely contested", "but the players' judgement was affected by the strong wind. Bell tested the Parton defence while Youdale, Carling, and Anderson gave some trouble to the Arlecdon defenders. Ultimately Arlecdon were awarded a penalty for handling, and W. Stainton added goal number two. Parton made a desperate rally, and after good concerted play Carling scored with a fiery drive. After this Arlecdon's defence was impregnable, and towards the close the Parton goal was attacked." 2-1
